Lies, damned lies, and wine

February 8, 2012 § Leave a comment

Saul Bellow, as Augie March, wrote, “Where striving ends, the truth comes as a gift.” Well, in the wine world there’s a lot of striving, so there’s a lot of bullshit. This week I wrote a somewhat contemplative column, on calumny.

I mean, it’s about BS. About how dishonest we all can be, without even trying — indeed, even when we’re trying to tell the truth, and maybe even especially when we’re trying to tell the truth. What I write might piss off some people in the industry, but I’m hardest on myself here.

Wine isn’t the only realm of lies, but it’s a ripe one. A lot of people have something to sell or something to prove, and yes I know it’s a business so you have to find ways to make your money, but man can we all lay it on pretty thick… The story is the psychological effects of playing this game we play.

  • great article! true of so much of what we consume and how our society operates. . . including the pharmaceutical industry. Also helped me to understand why I am frequently disappointed with a “splurge” wine. . .
